The professorship of Digital Soil Mapping was jointly established by the Helmholtz Centre Potsdam German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) and the Leibniz University Hannover.
The research of the group focuses on methodological developments for the determination of key variables of topsoil (e.g. organic carbon, texture, soil moisture) based on remote sensing data. This is based on optical properties of both laboratory databases and airborne/satellite sensors, as well as the demonstration of soil mapping and monitoring capabilities in test cases. Future research should evolve linking several remote sensing techniques for the gain of soil data, using new big data computational methods such as machine learning and artificial intelligence methods.
